TECHNOLOGY - Free e-books from the British Library

The British Library opens its resources of knowledge digitally.

In specific, more than 65.000 novels from the collection of the British National Library, among which Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and others, will be available to the public, by downloading it for free!

This project, funded by Micfrosoft,  is for Kindle Reader users Amazon, who also can order the printed version and the book to read if they wish.

Britain's National Library is obliged by law to buy at least a copy of each printed of every book published in the United Kingdom. Therefore, for such a huge number of books, it took 3 years of cooperation with Microsoft in order to scan them.

To begin with, the Library chose to present in a digital format books of the 19th century, as they do not fall under the copyright laws and may be offered for free ( as it is known, Copyright Act does not apply 70 years after author's death).

The British Library plans to extend digitizing books of the early 20th century, which also do not fall under the copyright law.
