"Social Grocery" initiative was launched by the Municipality of Athens (Greece) in 2007 and slowly spread to other regions of the country.
The first Social Grocery of the Municipality of Athens, was based on standards of the respective of social grocery stores created by the Carrefur Group in France and Belgium; part of this program is funded by the International Foundation for Carrefour.

The Social Grocery provides free groceries, detergents, frozen food, clothes, household appliances, toys, etc. families facing serious financial problems.
The aim of the Social Grocery is to provide basic products ( such as groceries, groceries, detergents, frozen food, clothes, household appliances, toys, etc.) in need for free to families facing serious financial problems, ensuring quality, health and safety standards, always with respect to the fellow man.
However, since the crisis knocked our door, more and more people are in need of such programs. Therefore, more Social Groceries opened since then, from Attica ( Saint Anargiroi, Markopoulo, etc.) to Xanthi, Kavala, Thessaloniki, Larissa, Tirnavos, Kalamata, Crete, Dodecanese, Veroia, Preveza, Katerini, Messologgi, Alexandroupoli, Ioannina, Karpenisi, Volos, Agrinio, Komotini, Chios, Serres.
