ECO NEWS - Bioclimatic Schools in Greece

"Green" school complexes, which are based on bioclimatic design will operate using renewable energy and eco-friendly materials (i.e.woodare beeing designed/ are under construction in Greece. Places to host such bioclimatic schools are Preveza, Katerini, Kozani and Crete.

Katerini's Bioclimatic School

Preveza

One of the first bioclimatic schools in Greece ends in the town of Preveza. This is an addition to a total area of ​​140 sq.m. in 'Karamaneio' Kindergarten.The building is constructed entirely of wood- an economic but high quality material-with very good insulation, antibacterial as well as fire resistant.

Katerini
 
The bioclimatic school of Katerini, will host the fifth elementary school. The work began by opening and defining the area.The school is expected to be ready in the summer of 2013. The project budget amounts to 3.7 million and funding will be through the NSRF.


Kozani

Both the Kindergarden and the Elementary School, apart from the school buildings themselves ( that will serve total of 300 students), will include:

• the provision of areas within the school complex for use by local residents at off hours (eg, library and special rooms)

• the ability to integrate classrooms between them and the places breaks so they can be exploited in various ways (multi-purpose room)• standard bioclimatic character to the design and integration of renewable energy systems (solar, geothermal)

• exploitation of infrastructure and services, broadband network, so that students have quick access to the Internet and to allow the remote collaborations.

The duration of the project implementation is 48 months, the eligible public expenditure in calculating the Community contribution amounts to EUR 9,123,000 and the time eligibility date expenditure shall be December 31, 2015.


Crete

Bioclimatic and fully accessible for people with disabilities will be the new school will be built in the area "Megalos Lakos" in Crete. The school complex of Gazi, will host 360 students and is expected to be completed by May 2014.

The complex will be consisted of two seperate buildings in order to save energy and will include
Projected to grow 15 classrooms, 6 laboratories classrooms, administration areas and service areas for students and parents, as well as sports infrastructure and events.
