TECHNOLOGY - Greek Students "Illuminate" Facebook!

Two greek students of Athens University of Economics and business, Alexis Tzanetopoulos and Filippos Protogeridis, were awarded in a competition organized by Microsoft Imagine Cup 2011 in the Category  Computer Application Development’ for their innovative formula under the greek name eclipsis.
What is Eclipsis Application?

Eclipsis is an innovative formula, based on vocal commands helping users with eyesight problems to navigate on Facebook.

According to the developers, who have been working on this platform for almost a year, this is the first time worldwide that such a platform is ever developed; the only available platforms for users with eyesight problems are the so called Screen Readers.

However, there are no such assistants for the Internet and social networks as Facebook. Ellipsis’s innovation is in the vocal commands as well as in keyboard shortcuts, through which the user can easily navigate in the web page instead, without spending time, as data is converted to sound and the user does not get confused (*).

Why Greek Name?
According to Filippos, one of the developers, The name of the application could not be more manifested. "We tried to find a name that has to do with Greece. The eclipse has to do with the difficulties of a blind who cannot see and his sight is ‘hiden’"says Filippos.

How to use Eclipsis: The user logs into a website instead of Facebook and starts using the application.

Next goal: Develop the same application for Wikipedia and Youtube, as well as other websites that have great impact.

Difficulties: Many and important, as such as project requires time and devotion.

At the moment: Are in request of an investor to place this formula on the market. However, they do not give up and they are preparing a new project to participate in Microsoft’s Imagine Cup 2012, with a new more advanced formula, a dialogue between the computer and the user.

(*) A website contains numerous data; this itself makes web navigation difficult for a blind end user, as he needs to press many times the arrow keys on the keyboard in a raw, having previously memorized the moves to be made. Such a process quite tiring and time consuming.
