SOCIETY - Pigi Serrwn: The First Greek Village to use Drachma!

In popular assembly held in Pigi (Serres), the approximately 2,000 villagers-mostly elderly-decided to use in their daily trade, drachma.

It is the first village in Greece which uses such a practice. In Europe, such as practice has been established by villages of Germany, Italy and Spain. 

The nitiator of this idea was a Greek-German, who works in Stuttgart. When he  visited the village Pigi last Serres Christmas to see his parents, told the villagers what  a small German village did, in doing business with the old currency.


The problem to this practice was finding a great quantity of Dracmas in coins and and notes. Some did find old dracmas in chests, but the great help was given by Banknote Collectors' Association of Northern Greece

Villagers admitted to the newspaper "Free Press" that the problem was finding so many notes and coins in drachmas. Some found it quite hidden in chests, while the great help he gave Banknote Collectors Association of Northern Greece, who gave a significant number of banknotes in Drachmas.

According the Local Council Olga Kehagias, after counceling lawers, that ensured that such an action was not illegal, drachmas was distributed and the ratio was decided to be 500 Drachmas per 1 Euro.
