Organic jeans
may be the new trend for both power and resource savings. However, how could
this be achieved?
Clariant, a
Swiss chemical company has the answer to this riddle, as it has developed
a method, that if it is applied by ¼ of jeans’ manufacturers worldwide, then the water quantity saved will be that
much to meet the needs of of 1.7 million
people.
This new technology, known as Advanced Denim, was presented at the 16th Congress of Chemistry and Green Engineering, which was organized by the Green Chemistry Institute of the American Chemical Society.
According
to Mr.Miguel Sanchez, Clariant’s textile engineer, conventional production
methods require at least 15 dye tanks, as well as harmful chemicals, while
Advanved Denim technology requires only one, ecological dye. Therefore, following
the new technique instead of the conventional, will require 92% less water and 30% less energy.
It is estimated that if this innovative method is widely applied it will save huge amounts of water annually, preventing 8.3 million cubic meters of liquid waste and saving up to 220 million of electric kilowatt hours.
