PERSONAL STORIES - Best Young Researcher Award

Greek Phd in Biology, Dr. Zaharoula Nikolakopoulou of Queen Mary University (London) won worldwide acclaim for her work, winning the award for best young researcher.

Dr. Zaharoula Nikolakopoulou

The biologist coming from Mouzaki Messinia’s (Greece),  studied the protective role of Omega-3 fats on mouth and skin cancer.

The award was presented during the 10th World Congress of International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids, 2012, held in Vancouver, Canada.

According to the research, made by Dr. Nikolakopoulou,  Omega-3 fat acids contained in oily fish such as salmon, trout and sardines, selectively prevent cancer growth  in early or advanced stage, identifying  a molecular marker of this process.

Dr. Nikolakopoulou stated "It is great honor to have received this award for my research,"  and follows "I really believe that there is considerable hope in the use of Omega-3 fat acids for  the prevention and treatment of skin,  mouth  as well as other type of cancers."

Professor Professor E Kenneth Parkinson (Head of Research for Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences, Head of the Oral Cancer Research Group within the Institute of Dentistry, Queen Mary University) stated Dr. Nikolakopoulou’s research results can help to monitor clinical trials through the use of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fat acids and help in identifying similar but more effective anticancer molecules.

"These observations may lead to a new approach for the prevention and treatment of cancer, particularly head and neck cancer. Dr. Nikolakopoulou really worth this award."

Dr. Nikolakopoulou’s short Biography

  • Studied at the Department of Biology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), Greece
  • Continued with postgraduate studies (Master of Science) in Immunology at Imperial College London
  • Followed by a second postgraduate study (Master of Science) related to anti-leukemia at University College London (UCL).
  • Received a scholarship from the Medical Research Agency (Medical Research Council) and worked on her PhD at Queen Mary University in oral & skin cancer.
