An innovative hotel opened its doors to
the public in August 2013 and
aims not only to offer multiple incentives
to its guests to effectively help in
saving energy, but claim the title of the greenest building across the African continent.
Hotel Verde is a new hotel complex at the airport
of Cape Town (South Africa). What
makes it stand out is the adoption of environmental friendly techniques
and innovations in order to save energy.
Water
- 100 underground drill holes to adjust building’s temperature, through heat pumps and fans that run by an intelligent heat control distribution system that works accordingly to the hotel areas that are used. All these systems are based on water circulation as heating medium.
- Bath and shower water is recycled and reused in toilets, reducing significantly water consumption.
- Rain water and ground water is collected, recycled and filtered and used to water hotel’s plants, as well as crops and vegetables for the restaurant. This whole procedure contributes to savings of 37% in drinking water.

Construction
- Building’s construction has been made with techniques to reduce the use of cement. Instead, hollow recyclable plastic beads were put into the cement, reducing energy consumption (-1284 tones of cement), without causing any complication in building’s structural integrity and competence.

Energy
- Solar Panels are set up and arranged in a way to provide shade and energy simultaneously.
- Hotel guests also contribute to energy production when using the gym.
- Elevators work with recyclable energy, allowing energy savings from 20 to 35% (compared to conventional energy consumption).
