The cause millions of people suffer from eating disorders such as Αnorexia nervosa and bulimia is traced by scientists from the
University of California, in San Diego (USA).
According to their announcement, in the
brain of a patient suffering from eating disorder there are specific changes.
These changes explain why they (patients) have developed an abnormal
relationship with food.
More specifically, Dr. Walter (Professor of Psychiatry & University’s Director of the Research Program for Treatment on Eating Disorders) explained: "In the case of Anorexia nervosa, the study of the images we got from patients’ brain helped us understand why those suffering from this disease avoid food, thereby enabling us to develop therapies that target directly to the cause of the problem rather than the symptom or secondary behaviours”.
Given this breakthrough on Eating Disorders, the next difficult and challenging task is to develop the appropriate treatments, since those applied currently have not always
been effective.
