According to the clinical outcome on animal testing, published in the medical journal "Science Translational Medicine", the medicine achieved full tumor eradication. This highly effective outcome makes it promising for clinical trial on patients.
Americans and Japanese researchers, led by the Japanese Professor in Medicine Yusuke Nakamura (Chicago University), stated that the medicine can be given either by injection(intravenously )or as a pill; in both cases the drug is well tolerated with reduced toxicity, resulting to small side effects.
The drug inhibits the action of a protein ( enzyme ) called TOPK, which is overproduced in several tumor types, such as lung and breast cancer.
Researchers hope that the medicine will be useful on other tumors ( i.e., brain , liver and bladder tumors) as well as in some types of leukemia .
In cooperation with oncologists at Chicago University they are already planning the first clinical trial on people by the fall of 2015.
